Sixth- and seventh-grade students at Midway Middle School represented Georgia and welcomed Dr. David E. Guggenheim to the school Friday, March 13.
Guggenheim, also know as the Ocean Doctor, is an oceanographer on a mission. In one year, he will visit a school in each of the 50 states and territories to teach students about the ocean and conservation. His tour is called the 50 Years, 50 States and 50 Speeches.
Midway Middle School was selected as his stop in Georgia, thanks to Susan Croon, a sixth-grade science teacher at Midway, who applied for the visit at Oceandoctor.org.
In addition to giving speeches, Guggenheim is collecting messages from students across the United States to put in 50 bottles. These bottles will be delivered to President Barack Obama and his administration to illustrate the hopes, dreams and appreciation students have for our oceans. Students at Midway Middle School were eager to take part and turned in letters to Guggenheim.
The students at Midway Middle School will be tracking Guggenheim as he travels throughout his tour via his Web site, Oceandoctor.org.
