Flemington will be getting a used car dealership soon.
Mike Gordon, a representative for Ralph Trapnell, requested a business license for the dealership the March city council meeting. The dealership will be on two vacant lots at the corner of Highway 84 and Patriots Trail. Gary Dodd owns the lots. Access to the dealership will be from Patriots Trail.
Approximately 100 vehicles will be for sale at the dealership. There will not be a service department or body shop. A detailing shop will be set up. The property has been cleaned up and five oak trees and 85 plants planted.
"The work in the yard looks good," Councilman Palmer Dasher said.
Gordon said once the lease is signed, they hope to be ready for business by the first of April.
The business license was approved, dependent on the drain for washing cars is inspected and the council receives a copy of the signed lease.
In other business, it was reported that Flemington will be receiving three welcome signs for the entrances to the city, and having an existing sign at city hall renovated to read "Welcome to Flemington." The signs will be created by Jim Johns of Sign Concepts, and will be paid for with hotel/motel tax dollars. The signs will cost $14,662.
The city will also receive a new sign at city hall that will read "Flemington City Hall." The cost of this sign will be $10,362.
The council discussed the type of lettering that would look best on the signs.
"We're going to have three of these, so we better get it right," Councilwoman Donnie Smith said.
She moved to accept the proposal upon approved lettering.
City Attorney Craig Stafford recommended against allowing Hot Stop Convenient Store owner Jongmi Edwards to have gaming machines in the store. Edwards made the request at the February meeting, but council tabled it so Stafford could research the legality of the machines.
Stafford said the city needed to "err on the side of caution" and not condone the machines.
Flemington's next city council meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. on April 8.
