American Humane — the country’s first national animal welfare organization — recently announced the semi-finalists for its annual Hero Dog Awards, including a Fort Stewart dog. It’s a nationwide competition that searches for and recognized America’s standout dogs in five categories, including therapy dogs, service and guide dogs, military dogs, law enforcement and first responder dogs, and emerging hero dogs.
Gino — a canine living at Fort Stewart — is one of the five semi-finalists in the military dog category. Now, America will vote to see which dogs will make it to the finals and have the opportunity to receive American Humane’s Hero Dog Award. Often referred to as the Oscars for dogs, the winner will be crowned at a star-studded awards gala broadcasted on national television.
Military Working Dog (MWD) Patrol Drug Detector Dog (PDDD) Gino has become an integral part of the community of Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Over the course of six years, MWD Gino has demonstrated exceptional skills in drug detection.
Since joining the esteemed 93rd Military Working Dog Kennels at Fort Stewart, Gino has consistently proven himself as a crucial member of a certified team. Throughout his tenure, he has had numerous successful finds, solidifying his reputation as the premier drug detector dog within the 93rd Kennels. In the past year alone, Gino’s extraordinary efforts led to the discovery of marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine in 11 separate instances. Additionally, his keen nose has aided in uncovering several weapons during his thorough searches.
Recognizing the remarkable potential of MWD Gino, FORSCOM made the decision to send him to the newly established Marine Corps Tracking School in February 2023. Equipped with new skills, both MWD Gino and his dedicated handler are now capable of executing long-distance personnel movements, enabling them to locate criminals or lost individuals effectively.
MWD Gino’s presence serves as a constant reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of our military personnel, ensuring the safety and security of all those within their care. MWD Gino continues to make a lasting impact within the community he so faithfully serve.
