The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in after a Flemington man was shot in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning.
Liberty County Sheriff Will Bowman confirmed that his deputies were dispatched to an Old Hines Road residence about 9:30 a.m. after 911 received a call about a domestic situation. Deputies responding to the scene engaged the subject twice, Sheriff Bowman said, and fired at him the second time.
“As a result, our guys got involved in an officer-involved shooting,” the sheriff said.
The suspect, identified as Andre Deon Haggray, 30, of Flemington died at Liberty Regional Medical Center, county coroner Reginald Pierce confirmed.
According to the GBI, deputies arrived at the home and made contact with Haggray in the backyard. Haggray pulled out a handgun and a deputy fired at Haggray, who then went into woods behind the home.
Deputies then encountered Haggray while in the woods, and there was an exchange of gunfire between Haggray and deputies. Haggray ultimately made his way to a nearby dirt road where he encountered additional deputies. Haggray raised his hand with the gun in hand and the deputies fired, hitting Haggray. Haggray was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“We just want to say prayers to the family and to our officers responding and doing a great job,” the sheriff said. “We are trying to make sure we keep our citizens safe in Liberty County. The county should be happy we have good officers who went out there and did their job today.”
Haggray will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiners Office in Pooler for an autopsy.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Atlantic District Attorney’s Office for review.
