Hearings on proposed tax increases

Citizens’ opportunities for comments and questions on tax increases will start Nov. 12 at noon when the Liberty County Hospital Authority and the Development Authority will present public hearings in the courthouse annex.

Both authorities are required to hold three hearings because they are seeking tax increases. The second hearing will be on the same day, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. in the annex.

The development authority receives two mills in taxes according to its charter. Since the value of the tax digest has increased, the two mill levy will bring in more money than last year. State law defines this as a tax increase, even though the two-mill rate remains constant.

The hospital authority is seeking an 11.8 percent increase, to 3.25 mills.

Last year the hospital authority asked for a four-mill increase; the commissioners approved three.

The final hearing will be on the day of the commissioners’ regular mid month meeting, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m. The commission session will follow at 5:30 p.m.
