A traffic stop Tuesday afternoon turned into a high-speed chase in Liberty County.

According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Corey Nadeau, who attempted to make a traffic stop shortly before 4 p.m. on Darsey Road, the suspect, a male driver operating a black Hyundai, sped off.

With Nadeau in pursuit, the suspect turned onto South Main Street Extension, onto West Oglethorpe, then turned left onto Dunlevie Road in Allenhurst.

Nadeau said he attempted to use the PIT (precision immobilization technique) to stop the driver at the intersection of Talmadge and Dunlevie roads.

The suspect allegedly drove at speeds of 110 mph.

With Nadeau and backup officers in pursuit, the suspect drove onto the oncoming traffic lane while heading in the direction of Riceboro.

When the driver reached the intersection of EB Cooper Highway and Barrington Ferry Road, he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a power pole and a fiber cable box, which provides internet service.

The suspect got out of the vehicle carrying a trash bag, allegedly with several pounds of marijuana inside.

As the suspect ran down Barrington Ferry, Nadeau who parked his vehicle on Barrington Ferry, released his canine to stop the suspect. Nadeau said once his canine partner was released, the suspect gave up.

The suspect faces numerous charges. The incident remains under investigation.
