Fred’s Inc., has announced that they plan to close 159 “under-performing stores” by the end of May. The press release listed the Hinesville store among those being scheduled for closure.

The statement noted that the retailer sought the advice of investment banking firm PJ Solomon to assess its options and hired a liquidation firm to help manage the closure process.

Fred’s Inc. currently has 557 stores nationwide. Of the 159 stores set for closure Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee are the states losing the most stores.

"After a careful review, we have made the decision to rationalize our footprint by closing under-performing stores, with a particular focus on locations with shorter duration leases," Fred’s CEO Joseph Anto said in the statement. "Most of these stores have near‐term lease expirations and limited remaining lease obligations."
