Hinesville mayor fighting foreclosure

Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas said Monday the attempt by the U.S. Bank National Association to foreclose on his home is being handled privately.
According to a public notice published in the Feb. 6 edition of the Coastal Courier, Thomas and wife, Claudia, defaulted on a $159,300 mortgage loan, originally handled by Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, Inc.
Thomas' home was to be included in a March 4 public auction in front of the Liberty County courthouse, but the mayor said steps are being taken to ensure his home is not put up for the highest bidder.
He declined, however, to go into detail about how the situation is being corrected, calling the subject "a private matter."
"It is in the process of being taken care of," the mayor said. "The issue is being handled between me and my mortgage company."
