WIESBADEN, Germany — A search effort is underway to find four soldiers from Fort Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division who are missing in Lithuania.

The M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle the four missing soldiers were operating during a training exercise has been located in Lithuania. The vehicle was discovered submerged in a body of water in a training area after a search by U.S. Army, Lithuanian armed forces and other Lithuanian authorities.

The soldiers, assigned to the 1st Brigade, which is on a deployment to eastern Europe, were reported missing in a training area near Pabradė. The soldiers were conducting tactical training at the time, according to the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command.

Lithuanian law enforcement and armed forces, along with the Army, are conducting the search.

“I would like to personally thank the Lithuanian Armed Forces and first responders who quickly came to our aid in our search operations,” said Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, the V Corps commanding general. “It’s this kind of teamwork and support that exemplifies the importance of our partnership and our humanity regardless of what flags we wear on our shoulders.”
