A Hinesville teenager reportedly drowned Saturday night in Long County.

According to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles, four teens were wading near the Long County boat ramp located on Beards Bluff Road shortly after 8 p.m. when one of the teens waded too far and stepped into a part of the water which dropped off steeply, causing the teen to struggle to return to the dock.

The teen identified, as 18-year-old Jeremiah Gilyard from Hinesville, apparently did not know how to swim, according to Nobles. A male friend attempted to rescue Gilyard.

The teens called 911, and a crew from the Long County Fire Department arrived within minutes and recovered the teen within an hour. The teenager was pronounced deceased.

The drowning remains under investigation through the Long County Sheriff’s Office.
