A woman woman was shot and killed Wednesday night, Jan. 20, in what police say appears to have been a robbery attempt.
According to Hinesville Police Department Criminal Investigation Division Commander, Capt. Tracey Howard, the 56 year old woman appears to have been the victim of an attempted robbery at a convenience store located on the corner of Memorial Drive and Gause Street. Howard said officers were dispatched to the location at 6:03 p.m. after they got a 911 call of a car jacking. When officers arrived they found the woman laying on the ground on the driver's side of her vehicle unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive the woman to no avail and she was pronounced dead.
Howard said a tape of the shooting shows the woman was approached by a suspect wearing dark clothing. The suspect approached the woman’s driver's side from the front of the vehicle.
Howard said the suspect appeared to make some kind of verbal demand of the woman. As the woman was searching through her vehicle a commotion took place and the suspect allegedly produced a gun and fired at the woman striking her.
Howard said one shell casing was recovered. After allegedly shooting the woman the suspect fled across the street to the Liberty Prayer Church where a woman was sitting in her vehicle. The suspect allegedly pulled the gun on the woman and demanded her vehicle. The woman was not hurt during the car jacking.
