A Liberty County jail officer now faces charges for mistreating an inmate.
According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s detectives were investigating an incident involving a jail inmate when they discovered evidence of a deputy jailer apparently mistreating an inmate. The jail administrator was notified and he requested an immediate investigation into the alleged mistreatment.
That investigation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for a violation of the state statute on cruelty to inmates. The deputy jailer was also found to have violated numerous sheriff’s office policies, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputy jailer in question has been terminated and placed under arrest. The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council has been notified, and they will conduct an independent investigation.
In a statement, the LCSO said, “Sheriff Bowman and the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office are committed to the humane and ethical care of those in our custody, and mistreatment will not be tolerated.”
The LCSO added the deputy jailer is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
