Authorities are scouring the woods off Briar Bay Road in Riceboro right now looking for a woman whose daughter was found in the area.

Editor's note: this story updates to correct spelling of name.

A Georgia State Patrol helicopter found the body of Mandi Michelle Morehouse shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday about 3 miles from where her vehicle was discovered in a ditch off Briar Bay Road in Riceboro.

Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles said around 11 a..m. Morehouse's family reported her and her daughter missing from their Long County home. Long County Sheriff's deputies conducted a search in that area and didn't find her.

When it was discovered a girl had been found walking along a dirt portion of Briar Bay Road around 2:18 p.m. Tuesday., officials in Liberty and Long counties determined she was Morehouse's daughter and began a search for Morehouse.

Earlier, Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said an 8-year-old girl was found wandering in the woods, and she told deputies her mother had a car accident and they had been wandering in the woods for two days.

When authorities found the vehicle they began a search for Morehouse over an area of roughly 200 acres.

Deputies with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office and Long County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Midway Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol helped look for Morehouse.

The girl suffered minor scratches and insect bites, according to Sikes, but is otherwise in good condition. She was found by an off-duty EMT who was out with a metal detector, authorities said, and he called 911.
