April 1 is the deadline for Liberty County property owners to file an initial return for taxable real and personal property and mobile homes that they own as of Jan. 1.
“This is one of the taxpayer’s rights that is designed to help allow for property owners to be taxed fairly,” said Virgil Jones, Liberty County tax commissioner. “The filing of a return allows a property owner to review what the county has listed as their taxable property and values, to state what they actually have and to state what they believe to be the property’s taxable value.”
Jones said filing a return also allows businesses to make sure that they are taxed on the correct equipment and inventory.  “It is also good for property owners with boats and other taxable equipment,” he added.
Once the return is filed, the information given by the property owner is reviewed by the county — a corrected value could mean a lower tax bill.
There is no fee to file, but property owners must file in the tax assessor’s office. Filers must present a photo ID.
