Dr. Franklin Perry’s tenure as Liberty County superintendent of schools could be coming to an end.
School board members voted not to extend Dr. Perry’s contract. Board members voted in 2022 to extend Dr. Perry’s contract to 2025, at annual salary of $217,821.75.
Board Chair Verdell Jones said she would contact the Georgia School Board Association for training for a superintendent search.
The school system’s enrollment is growing, from 10,800 in January to more than 11,100 this fall. Enrollment in July 2023 was 10,005. Perry was named interim superintendent in May 2017. He was the lone finalist for the position and became the superintendent in 2018. Prior to coming to Liberty County, Perry was the superintendent of Sumter County from 2002–05, assistant superintendent of Bibb County Public Schools from 2005–06 and superintendent in Twiggs County from 2006-09.
He served as an assistant principal and a consultant in Greene County and was a consultant in Vienna and Conyers.
At the board’s October 8 meeting, Perry said because the Liberty County School System is a charter system it may not have to make up the days missed because of Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene. Perry said it is the board’s decision if those days should be made up.
