Local legendary educator passes away

He was loved and respected by many in the community. The current football field house at Bradwell Institute bears his name. He was a teacher, a coach, a principal and a school superintendent.

Edgar M. "Ed" Edwards, 96, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Savannah.

Edwards became superintendent of Liberty’s public schools in the late 1960s and he served in that capacity for about 20 years. He taught and coached at Bradwell Institute from 1950-57 and was principal of the high school from 1958-68. He also is a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 in both the Atlantic and Pacific.

Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. tonight at Hinesville First United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services will begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Hinesville First United Methodist Church. Viewing will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Hinesville Cemetery.
