The body found Friday afternoon off of a boat ramp in the Altamaha River in Wayne County has been identified as Willie Joe Vaughn, according to Wayne County Sheriff John Carter.

The cause of death has not been released.

Carter said a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu belonging to Vaughn was spotted submerged off a boat ramp at the end of Arnold River Road. The fisherman who spotted the vehicle notified authorities around 2 p.m. Friday. A dive team from the Wayne County Volunteer Fire and Rescue went into the river to confirm the make and model of the vehicle and discovered the body of a woman inside.

Carter said it took two hours to pull the vehicle from the river.

Vaughn, 73, had been missing since last week.
