The remains of a person were found in a Gause Street home destroyed by fire Thursday night in Hinesville, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m., according to Hinesville Fire Department Public Information Officer Robert Kitchings. He said units from HFD, Walthourville Fire Department and Liberty County Fire Department Station 15, as well as officers from the Hinesville Police Department, responded to the call.

They found fire had already heavily damaged the old wooden home and flames could be seen coming from the structure, and Kitchings said it was difficult to fight the blaze due to the home’s age.

It was unclear whether the person found inside was a man or a woman, and Kitchings did not say how long it took firefighters to get the fire under control.

The fire is under investigation.
