The Boys and Girls Club might be coming to Long County.

During the Long County Board of Commissioners meeting May 3, Jeffrey Mitchell of the Long County Road Department expressed interest in starting a local branch.

He said his objective is to promote leadership and values to the youth of Ludowici.

Mitchell told the commissioners he is trying to secure sponsorship from various sources, including Coca-Cola. He did not ask for county funding.

The commissioners and Mitchell discussed potentially using a Long County school gym as a temporary base until enough money could be raised for the Boys and Girls Club’s own facility.

Also at the meeting, the Rev. Eddie L. Campbell of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Temple asked about paving the Long County portion of Thompson Road. About 200 feet of this road is in Long, while the rest is in Liberty County.

Campbell said he has met with Walthourville Mayor Daisy Pray and that the city has agreed to pave its section of the road. Now, Campbell hopes Long County will pave its section.

In another matter, Faith Baptist Christian Academy baseball coach Gene Reynolds Jr. talked with the commissioners about building a baseball field for his school. He has 15 acres in mind on which to build, behind Faith Baptist Church Pastor Terry Sellars’ home, and he presented diagrams of the land, as well as a dorm, to the commissioners.

The commissioners took no action during the meeting.
