Events spotlight homeless, hunger
hunger and homeless week
The Hinesville Homeless Prevention Program is participating in national Hunger and Homlessness Awareness Week with a series of events.

Hinesville’s Homeless Prevention Program within the city’s Community Development Department will host a series of events to raise awareness for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 11-19.

The national week is an annual program to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participating groups hold educational, service, fundraising and advocacy events.

"The city of Hinesville’s Homeless Prevention Program is excited to share in this national focus," assistant director of the Homeless Prevention Program Kristin Bryant said. "Hunger and homelessness are national and local epidemics that impact people every day and these events will work to shed light on this problem and the work we do every day to contribute to the solution."

Nonprofits, churches, community advocates, organizations and citizens interested in making a difference are invited to:

Tuesday: Homeless Not Hopeless Senior Assembly

9 a.m., Bradwell Institute

The assembly will be to educat youth about homeless and dispel myths about homeless people.

Wednesday: Omega Psi Phi Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway

11 a.m., Hinesville City Hall

Members of Omega Psi Phi will give away five Thanksgiving baskets of food to families in need.

Wednesday: Helping Hands: United Way of the Coastal Empire Mass Mobile Food Drive

Volunteers needed 9 a.m.-1 p.m., food pickup 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Liberty County Performing Arts Center

The United Way of the Coastal Empire and the Homeless Prevention Program will collect canned and non-perishable food.

Thursday: Raise Our Voice for the Hungry

2:30-7 p.m., Manna House

The Homeless Prevention Program staff cook and serve a meal to those in need. The community is welcome to join in.

Interstate lane closures, detours set
Traffic shift in effect for 20 days near Savannah Airport

The Georgia Department of Transportation continues to improve highway infrastructure throughout the area. As a result, work on construction and maintenance projects will continue through Saturday. Closure schedules may change due to weather or other factors.

Lane closures by county are scheduled as follows:

 

Bryan County

·         From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday I-16 Westbound from US 80/Exit 143 to SR 119/Exit 137 will have single-lane closures for bridge rehabilitation work.

 

Chatham County I-95 Resurfacing

·         There will be continuous double-lane closures and a shift in traffic patterns for 20 days near the Savannah Airport as approach slabs at Pipemakers Bridge are replaced. Lane closures will be in effect between mileposts 103 and 104 Monday, and ramp closures at Exit 102 will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.

 

Liberty County

·         From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through May 12, there will be nightly ramp closures with detours at I-95 exits 76 and 67 to replace existing concrete on ramps.
