Ga. Democratic Party chairman to speak at local banquet

Mike Berlon, chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, will be the keynote speaker at the Liberty County Democratic Party’s annual awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the old Walmart Shopping Center on Gen. Screven Way in Hinesville.

Berlon has been involved in Democratic politics for more than three decades. He has been a candidate for office, recruited and worked with candidates in both local and statewide campaigns, sponsored countless fundraisers and promoted Democratic ideals. Most recently, Berlon served as lieutenant governor candidate Carol Porter’s campaign manager. He is the immediate past president of the Georgia Association of Democratic County Chairs.  He was the longest-serving Democratic party chairman in Gwinett County.

Berlon earned an undergraduate degree in political science and a law degree from Georgia State University.  He currently is a practicing attorney in Lawrenceville.

The Liberty County Democratic Party’s annual awards banquet honors those who have positively impacted the community while furthering the party’s ideals. Three honorees were selected for 2011.

The Winfred Bell Yellow Dog Democrat Award, named for the late Liberty County Democratic Committee Chairman Winfred Bell, goes to a person who demonstrates deep commitment to the Democratic Party. This year’s honoree is Ervin Wells.

The Senator Rene’ Kemp Public Service Award, named for the late, longtime state senator, goes to a local elected official who exemplifies the ideals of the party and works for the betterment of his or her constituents. This year’s honoree is Liberty County Tax Commissioner Virgil Jones. 

The Senator Glenn Bryant Award, named for the late state senator who provided constant support to his community, goes to a person who has continued this tradition of community service. This year’s honoree is longtime local attorney Billy Jones.

The public is invited to attend the banquet. Tickets cost $50 and are available from any Liberty County Democratic Committee member or by calling 876-4007 or 977-4296.
