Girl killed, mother hurt in accident

A Ludowici man has been charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree for his involvement in a May 28 wreck that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old.

Long County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tom Sollosi said Jason Levon Rhodes, 32, who initially was arrested at the scene of the accident and charged with driving under the influence, also was charged May 29 with serious injury by a vehicle and homicide by a vehicle in the first degree. 

The wreck happened on State Route 196 East in the Sand Hill community near the Glennville line, according to Georgia State Patrol troopers.

Ashmy Reyes Vazquez was killed and the girl’s mother, Horora Reyes, seriously was injured and taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. According to a hospital spokesperson, Reyes has been discharged.

Sollosi said Rhodes still is incarcerated, and the accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol’s Accident Reconstruction Team.
