In a split vote, the Long County Commission Thursday morning hired a second fire chief in less than a month.

Vice Chairman Cliff DeLoach said the commission hired Chris Moss as chief of the Ludowici/Long County Fire Department. He replaces McIntosh County Fire Department Chief Mark Deverger, who was hired less than a month ago to replace Chief Richard Truman who retired. Deverger stayed in the position for only three weeks, stepping down last week. Moss is currently a full-time captain with the Hinesville Fire Department.

In other actions, DeLoach said the board also voted to fire Assistant Chief of Operations Shawn Smith and suspend Capt. James Ashdown Jr., and Lt. Mary Butler. The length of the suspensions were for one week, according to commission Chairman Dwight Gordon.

The commission also voted to accept the previous resignation of Assistant Chief of Training Randy Combs, who submitted a letter of resignation on July 24. The Commission had not voted to approve it so Combs remained a member of fire department.

All of the actions at the called meeting were approved by a vote of 3-2 with Chairman Dwight Gordon, Commissioners Gerald Blocker and Willie Thompson voting in favor of the actions. Commissioners Robert Long and DeLoach voted no.
