A man, apparently hitchhiking toward Florida, was killed in a freak accident early Thursday.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper William Bowman reported the man was runover while sleeping near the South Newport River exit of I-95.
The victim, whose identity was not available Thursday, had apparently bedded down on on a dirt road near the McDonald's at the exit. He was traveling with two other men and they covered themselves with items found in the area.
Bowman said early today a utility employee drove down the road to read some water meters and ran over the man. When the meter reader drove back out of the area, the other hitchhikers stopped him and told him what happened.
The meter reader called 911.
