Mayor breaks deadlock

Presiding over his first Midway City Council meeting Monday, new Mayor Levern Clancy Jr. cast a tie-breaking vote to elect former Mayor Dr. Clemontine Washington as mayor pro tempore.

The four-member council had deadlocked in a 2-2 vote with Councilwoman Melice Gerace and Councilman T. Gerald Lee voting for Lee as mayor pro tempore, and Councilman Henry Stevens Jr. and Washington voting for Washington.

In breaking the tie in favor of Washington, Clancy said he valued Washington’s experience; she served eight years as mayor before being elected to a council seat in November. Lee and Stevens are both newcomers to the council.
