Officials investigate wreck that killed soldier
Victim, a motorcyclist, was part of 1st HBCT

An infantry soldier assigned to the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, was killed Saturday morning in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on Fort Stewart, according to a 3rd ID public affairs office news release. Pvt. 1st Class Zachary Smith was traveling in the northbound lane on Gulick Avenue when the accident occurred, the release stated.
Smith had served on active duty with the 3rd ID for 14 months as an infantryman. According to Lt. Col. Benjamin Garrett, 3rd ID public affairs officer, the accident still is under investigation, and no further information will be released until the investigation is complete and additional information is gathered.
He added that the Marne Division expresses its deepest condolences to Smith’s family members during this time and has extended chaplain support and assistance to his relatives.
