The Liberty County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a resolution seeking to rename an Interstate-95 interchange after one of its own.

The resolution urges the Georgia Department of Transportation and General Assembly to designate the I-95 interchange and bridge over U.S. Highway 17 at South Newport in recognition of the Rev. Willie Anderson Sr.

Anderson represented District 1 on the BoC from 1986-98, according to the resolution. Prior to his service on the BoC, the Liberty County native served in the Army in World War II and worked as a civil servant on Fort Stewart for more than 32 years. He also served as the first president of the Parent Teachers Association at Riceboro Elementary School, president for several terms in the Liberty County NAACP branch and as an activist in the civil-rights movement.

The interchange for which the commission is requesting designation is exit 67 on I-95.
