After a hot day, a cold front moving across the state today could bring storms to Liberty and Long counties tonight.

The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 98 with a heat index of 105 this afternoon. A heat advisory has been issued for 2-6 p.m.

But a cold front that has moved across the Midwest to the Southeast over the past few days is expected to move into the state today and hit the coast early Friday. Here's the forecast from the NWS:

"Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2am. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds. Increasing clouds, with a low around 74. West wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

The good news? After the front moves through the area, temperatures will be cooler. NWS predicts a high of 89 Friday, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The weekend is expected to be sunny, with highs in the upper 80s both days.
