Two recent routine traffic stops by the Ludowici Police Department led to the apprehension of two fugitives on the run, police said.

A little after midnight Jan. 24, Officer Tyler Manning stopped a vehicle for driving with suspected defective equipment. The driver, Robert Jones, 44, of Odum, was found to have an outstanding warrant from Hawkins County for failing to appear in court on drug charges, Ludowici police Chief Robert Poppell said.

Later that day, Sgt. Shane Middleton pulled over a vehicle that was speeding on Highway 84, Poppell said. The driver, Michael Humphrey, 33, of Sarasota, Florida, was found to have an outstanding warrant from Manatee County, Florida, for aggravated assault, the chief said.

Poppell said both Jones and Humphrey were taken into custody and placed under arrest. He said the men were provided an extradition hearing and will remain in custody until prosecuting agencies pick them up.

In other news, Poppell said citations had been issued for shoplifting, speeding, driving with a suspended vehicle registration, tag cover obstruction, driving too fast for conditions and driving without vehicle insurance.
