Long County Farm Bureau (LCFB) was recognized for its outstanding member programs and agricultural advocacy activities at the 86th Annual Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) Convention held Dec. 3-5 on Jekyll Island. Manuel Sneed is the LCFB president. Margaret Bess is the LCFB office manager.

LCFB received the GFB Rewarding Excellence in Ag Program (REAP) Cultivator Award in the organization’s small membership division. GFB’s REAP award honors county Farm Bureaus for the organization/membership, advocacy, leadership development, education & outreach activities they did between Sept. 1, 2022, and Aug. 31, 2023. The REAP Awards are divided into three tiers – Harvester (first), Planter (second) and Cultivator (third) with five tier winners in each of GFB’s three membership categories – small, medium and large.

“Georgia Farm Bureau has thrived since 1937 because of our dedicated volunteer leaders and county staff who work to promote agriculture in their local communities by visiting schools to teach students how farmers grow our food and meeting with their elected officials,” said GFB President Tom McCall. “It’s a pleasure to recognize Long County for the work they have done to promote agriculture in their community this past year.”

As a REAP Cultivator Award winner, LCFB received a plaque, and LCFB President Manuel Sneed was recognized during the GFB convention

Five people were killed and another one was injured following a two-vehicle accident in McIntosh County on Sunday morning.

Witnesses told Georgia State Patrol Trooper Christopher Ashdown that a Jeep Cherokee was traveling south on Interstate 95 at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended an Infiniti. The Cherokee hit a guard rail, bursting into flames. The crash and ensuing fire killed one adult and four children.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee has been identified a Reagan Dougan, 27. GSP troopers have learned she rented the vehicle in Raleigh, N.C., and was heading to Florida to meet her husband. The children were a 9-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and a 3-month-old boy.

Ashdown said the Cherokee was a rental and authorities are in the process of identifying the victims.  The driver of the Infiniti, from Long County, was transported to Southeast Regional Health System in Brunswick with non-life-threatening injuries.
