Long County aligned itself with the majority of other Georgians by supporting Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss in his U.S. Senate runoff with Jim Martin on Tuesday.
Chambliss got 816 votes to Martin’s 536. Throughout the state, Chambliss garnered 1,220,873 votes, which represented 57.4 percent of the vote, while Martin took 905,645 votes, or 42.6 percent.
Long County’s turnout was good, according to Marie Middleton, the superintendent for the board of elections.
“We had nearly 25 percent (24.8) of the eligible voters come out and vote on Tuesday,” Middleton said. “For a runoff, that is really high.”
