Long residents unhappy after neighborhood cut off

Residents of Miller Street in Ludowici are still in shock after the deluge Tropical Storm Debby left in its wake.

The Carters, who live on the 200 block of Miller and have been there for 12 years, are dealing with the consequences of living near Doctors Creek, which overflowed into their back yard coming within a few feet of their home. They were spared as the rain subsided, saving their home from water damage.

“We have had floods before,” Trudie Carter said, “but never beyond the fence line and never coming up toward our house. When I got home (Tuesday) night, I thought we were going to have it fight it off getting into our home. We expected it to flood but we never expected it to come to the home. Our entire yard is flooded. The water is stagnant. We’re not really sure where it’s going to go.”

Carter added the water from Doctors Creek is flowing into the neighborhood from two directions.

“We are the creek,” she said. “We won’t know the extent of the damage until the water goes down. We’ve tried to make it a beautiful place. We’ve never considered moving until now. We’ve put a lot of money into this home and to see it all go to waste and with the county just saying ‘it is what it is,’ we’re considering it now.”

Many on Madison Street and Lincoln’s Way in Crawford subdivision were not so lucky as the streets became flooded and water entered their homes. One resident said he had 6 inches of water in his home on Lincoln’s Way.

One of the only ways to get in and out of the neighborhood was by using all terrain vehicles.
