The College of Coastal Georgia will host the first event of its 2018 Distinguished Speaker Series on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Georgia Conference Center in Brunswick.

The event will feature retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Robert H. Scales, who will present “Stretched Thin… America’s Military at Risk — East Asia, the Black Sea area, the Middle East and Africa.”

During his military career, Scales commanded two units in Vietnam and later served in command and staff positions in the U.S., Germany and Korea before ending his military career as commandant of the U.S. Army War College.

After serving more than 30 years in the Army and earning numerous distinguished awards, such as the Silver Star and Legion of Merit, Scales was named president and CEO of Walden University in Baltimore. He then founded Colgen LLP, a consulting firm for senior military and civilian leaders in future warfare and national security strategy.

Scales is the author of several books, including “Yellow Smoke: The Future of Land Warfare for America’s Military,” “Lessons from the Iraq War,” and “Scales on War: The Future of America’s Military at Risk.” In addition to being an author, Scales works as a military analyst and news commentator.

The lecture is free to the public. There will be a book signing after the lecture.
