A man was killed in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Georgia Highway 196 and John Wells Road in Gum Branch shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class, Christopher Ashdown.
Ashdown said the driver of a Ford Pick up truck owned by Century Link was traveling westbound on Georgia Highway 196 when the driver of a Ford Focus sedan allegedly ran the stop sign causing both vehicles to collide..
The driver of the Focus, Steven Charles Samfilippo, 36, from Michigan was pronounced dead at the scene.
His sister who as a passenger in the vehicle was transported by ambulance to Liberty Regional Hospital in Hinesville with non-life threatening injuries. Ashdown reported that Samfilippo had come down from Michigan yesterday to help his sister (passenger) move from Fort Stewart to Fort Mead.
The driver of the Century Link vehicle was treated and released at the scene. Highway 196 was closed in both directions for several hours while troopers investigated the accident.
Units from Liberty County Fire Services, as well as Walthourville’s Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to extricate the victim from the vehicle. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office was on hand for traffic control.
