A man police say tried to rob a Hinesville convenience store was shot and killed by a store clerk Monday night.

Hinesville Police Department Chief of Detectives Capt. Tracey Howard said Marshall A. Fulwood, 58, of Hinesville, tried to rob the Kwikway Foodmart on the corner of Palm Drive and E.G. Miles Parkway around 8:35 p.m. Monday.

Fulwood was shot with a handgun by the store clerk, according to Howard, who said store video showed Fulwood went behind the counter and took cash from the register. As Fulwood was leaving the clerk fired one shot and hit Fulwood in the back, Howard said.

He also noted that Fulwood showed the clerk an “extended round magazine,” in his waistband, which apparently led the clerk to believe Fulwood was armed. Howard said the clerk “feared for his life,” during the incident.

A release issued Tuesday by the city of Hinesville said officers were dispatched to the store regarding a gunshot victim, and “further information received from the 911 operator indicated the caller had shot the individual who had robbed him with a handgun and the suspect was lying on the floor barely breathing.”

Fulwood was pronounced dead at the scene by Liberty Regional EMS emergency medical personnel, who reportedly found Fulwood unresponsive when they arrived.

The case is still under investigation, according to authorities.

Police say anyone with information related to this incident should call the HPD at 912-368-8211.
