The newest Fort Stewart garrison command sergeant major already understands the base and the community surrounding it.

Command Sgt. Maj. Marcus Marzett assumed the responsibility as the garrison’s top enlisted soldier Friday morning in a ceremony at Marne Chapel.

Marzett was a first sergeant in the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade from 2016-17 and recently was the command sergeant major for an engineer battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. He’s already fully aware of the connection between the community and the base.

“To me, it’s a sense of family and a bond between the coastal Georgia area and the families here on Fort Stewart working together as one,” he said.

Marzett also knows the pace of training and operations for the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart — while 2nd Brigade will be training across the post’s 278,000 acres, the 1st Brigade is leaving for a deployment to eastern Europe “I have to be an extension of my commander,” he said. “Me and my commander will divide and conquer to strive to reach the common goal, which is supporting the servant leaders of the Fort Stewart community, the families, retirees, civilians and so forth.”

Col. Marc Austin, the garrison commander, acknowledged he’s still learning the job after being in the position for a year and a half.

“I’m still learning about the scope of services we provide on a daily basis,” he said.

The garrison command has two priorities, Col. Austin said — the people and the Army, and it works to take care of soldiers and increase their readiness.

“We do that by providing services and a business model to allow the senior commander to command,” he added.

Col. Austin also encouraged Command Sgt. Maj. Marzett to reach out to the civilian deputy garrison commanders, Steve Hood and Travis Mobley.

“You are the voice of our employees. You are the first line for our soldiers and families in their housing and our soldiers in the barracks,” he said. “You will be tasked to learn and execute a myriad of tasks that nothing in your career to this point has prepared you to do.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Marzett, who twice deployed to Iraq and whose other overseas assignments include Korea, Poland, Lithuania and Kuwait, knows the stress the Army can put on a family over his 26 years in uniform. He’s moved three times within the last two years.

“I would like to thank God for such an amazing opportunity,” he said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity I will not take for granted. I have already observed the impacts of servant leadership across the installation and beyond. This is Stewart 7 signing on to the net, and I’m ready to make that dog hunt.
