The Federal Aviation Administration has been called in to investigate a small plane crash that sent two people to the hospital Saturday afternoon.
The single-engine plane crashed just after takeoff from a small airstrip, the Briar Patch Airport, off Green Morgan School Road, around 1 p.m. Saturday.
Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies were called out and found the plane in woods near the runway.
The plane’s pilot and passenger, Steven Berg, 71, of Midway, and Benny Ross, 58, of Midway, were taken to Memorial Health University Center in Savannah with non-life-threatening injuries, ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor said.
The plane suffered extensive damage, Ehsanipoor said.
The FAA took over the scene around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
