WASHINGTON — The Army is reassigning up to 600 active reserve and active duty troops to Fort Hood in Texas this summer and next year.
Lt. Col. Lee Packnett, an Army spokesman, said Friday that the service plans to locate its 1st Division West Headquarters unit, two brigades and six training battalions at the sprawling Central Texas Army post by June 1, 2010.
The changes will mean 535 military personnel and 66 civilians will relocate at Fort Hood. They will come from units at Fort Carson, Colo.; Fort Riley, Kan.; Fort Chaffee Ark., Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Stewart, Ga. and Fort Sill, Okla.
The relocations are part of an ongoing Army restructuring.
Packnett said the relocation of the unit allows trainers to be at mobilization training centers where they prepare troops before their deployments.
“Now soldiers and families will be at same location,” Packnett said.
More than 52,000 soldiers are assigned at Fort Hood with 100,000 family members living on and off the post, according to the Fort Hood Web site.
The units involved are the 1-393rd and 2-293rd Infantry Training Support Battalions and 3-393rd Field Artillery Training Support Battalion at Fort Chaffee; the 1-337th Aviation Training Suport Battalion at Fort Knox; the 166th Aviation Brigade Headquarters and 2-291st Aviation Training Support Battalion from Fort Riley.
Other units to be relocated are the 479th Field Artillery Brigade Headquarters at Fort Sill and the 1-351st Aviation Training Support battalion from Fort Stewart, the Army said.
Transfers from Kentucky, Georgia and Oklahoma should be done by June 1, 2010.
