FORT BENNING — Authorities say a Fort Benning soldier has died two days after collapsing and losing consciousness during a physical fitness test.

Military officials say the soldier, whose name hasn't been released, died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/TqIovA) that the soldier collapsed while on a two-mile run at the base on Tuesday. Officials say the soldier was taken to the hospital, and never regained consciousness.

Monica Manganaro, a public affairs spokeswoman at the base, says the death remains under investigation.

Few other details were available early Friday.

The base is in the Columbus area, near the Georgia-Alabama line.
