Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo, commander of Fort Stewart and the U.S. Army's Third Infantry Division, along with Medal of Honor recipient Don Jenkins recently presented gold medals of remembrance and certificates to about 60 children of 101st Airborne Division soldiers who were killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.
The White House Commission on Remembrance sponsored the awards, which were presented at Fort Campbell, Ky.
The Institute of Heraldry designed the gold medals of remembrance program to honor children who recently have lost parents and to symbolize the service and sacrifices made by soldiers in the defense of freedom.
