Fort Stewart’s soldiers deployed to Africa to help fight the ebola outbreak are not yet among the U.S. troops who are redeploying, according to post officials.

A press release by the Department of Defense Wednesday announced that most of the DoD personnel deployed to West Africa to support the U.S. Agency for International Development have returned to their home stations. However, Fort Stewart Public Affairs Office spokesman Kevin Larson said the 32 soldiers from the 82ndCivil Affairs Battalion who deployed to West Africa in December have not returned.

At the time the soldiers were preparing to go, battalion commander Lt. Col. Joe Malizia said his troops could be gone as long as eight months. He said the Stewart soldiers would serve mostly as communication liaisons between military organizations that would build ebola treatment units.
