Savannah is one of six cities chosen by the Department of Veterans Affairs to debut the VA’s new ad campaign, according to a recent VA news release. The VA invited local reporters to preview a new 30-second TV commercial Tuesday at the VA Savannah Primary Care Clinic.
The 3rd ID is currently redeploying to Hinesville and the greater Savannah area.
“VA is committed to reaching every veteran to say thank you for your service, and to let veterans know about the health care, benefits and services available to help them meet whatever challenges lie ahead,” said VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki. “Each day, veterans return from service all across the United States, and we want to welcome them home.”
The ad, according to the press release, emphasizes “the goal of a seamless transition between the Department of Defense and VA as military service members shed their uniforms and enroll with VA.”
The actor in the ad is Iraq veteran Robert Kugler — a former Marine currently studying acting in Los Angeles. The uniformed personnel in the background are also veterans, as are the students, the father and husband walking out of the house, and the doctor/instructor — an Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam.
“This is the first of several broadcast and cable television ads to be produced and aired over the next several months to inform returning veterans of the many benefits and services they have earned as a result of their military service,” the release reads.
The VA ad campaign is specifically directed at veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. This group of veterans will be encouraged to take advantage of medical benefits, education and career assistance, and even help buying a home. The six cities where the ad previewed were chosen based on the number of veterans returning from service to those communities this fall. In addition to Savannah, Norfolk, Va.; Raleigh, N.C.; El Paso, Texas; Watertown, N.Y. and Seattle were chosen.
