Veterans Day in an Army town is always kind of special.

Fort Stewart garrison commander Col. Townley Hedrick summed it up nicely Friday morning at the Hinesville VFW’s Veterans Day commemoration.

“I like to think of it as a celebration of being awesome,” Townley said, looking out into a crowd of veterans and their family members. “Being a part of the best team you’ll ever be a part of, the best team in the world.”

The VFW’s observance, complete with a bell tolling 11 times at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year to commemorate the end of the World War I in 1918, is just one of a number of Veterans Day events scheduled for Friday.

Also on tap for Friday is Hinesville’s annual Veterans Day parade, which is sponsored by East Liberty County American Legion Post 321.

The Courier’s Dan Scott is live streaming that event on the Courier Facebook page.
