MLK Jr. Day events set to commence

Liberty County’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances get underway tonight, and this year’s theme is “Reconciling Our Differences as We Unite and Renew the Dream.”

Love-It Productions will have a cultural arts presentation, “High Aspirations, High Standards, High Expectations,” tonight at 7 p.m. at First Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1642 Barrington Ferry Road in Riceboro. Bishop Fredrick D. McIver is the pastor.

Two events are scheduled for Saturday, beginning with the leadership breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the John D. McIver Auditorium of the Liberty County Community Complex in Midway. The keynote speaker is Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.

The Youth Explosion will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at First Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Riceboro.

Dr. King’s commemorative service will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at First Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Riceboro, with Hermon Scott, pastor of Baconton Missionary Baptist Church in Allenhurst, as the keynote speaker.

Monday’s annual parade will start at 10 a.m. from Bradwell Institute, with lineup beginning at 8:30 a.m.
