Liberty County officials are promoting a healthy lifestyle by holding a monthly 5K walk/ run event in James Brown Park in Hinesville. On June 4, a small group of citizens took to the trails to take part in the county’s efforts to get citizens out and active.

Liberty County Chairman and Liberty Proud and Healthy organizer Donald Lovette said they host the walks on the first Saturday of every month. Next month will be the exception, with the walk on July 9, due to the Fourth of July weekend.

He said they came up with the idea for the walks in order to promote family wellness in a way that is easy, non-competitive and free to join. He said they’ve had some success, and the walks have been going on for the past four to five years.

“Wellness is important,” he said. “And not just physical wellness, but emotional wellness also. Get out there and find some way to be active. And, once again, it is non-competitive. You don’t have to feel like you have to set any records. Some people walk it, some run it, some do one lap, some do two, and others do the whole 5K.”

The group does have T-shirts, which are now available to purchase for $10 each.

The next walks are set for July 9, Aug. 6, Sept. 3, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3.
