A routine traffic stop by a Liberty County sheriff’s deputy ended in a wreck for a motorcyclist when he allegedly attempted to flee.

The deputy attempted to stop the motorcyclist for speeding on Friday night shortly after 9 p.m., according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Ashdown. The motorcyclist allegedly would not stop and continued traveling westbound on West Oglethorpe Highway.

As the motorcyclist approached the intersection of Melody Drive, he struck the front end of a pickup that was attempting to change lanes when the driver spotted the deputy’s vehicle with lights flashing.

The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and sustained injuries in the wreck that required him to be flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

The accident is currently under investigation.
