A dispute between neighbors turned violent Sunday morning on Freedom Court in Hinesville.
According to Hinesville Police Detective James Snider, two neighbors had been in a dispute since Wednesday and it escalated to gunfire around 10 a.m.
According to a HPD incident report, Officer Jess Lamberth encountered Mikael Hedgepath standing in the parking lot. As Lamberth approached, Hedgepath placed a weapon on the ground, and Lamberth also saw a man, identified as Vaughn Grimmett, wounded and on the ground between two parked cars.
Grimmett, who was conscious, told Lamberth he had been shot. The officer grabbed his trauma bag and began administering aid. According to the report, Grimmett was shot in the stomach and not bleeding from his wounds.
Grimmett was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for further treatment.
According to the report, Grimmett and his brother were outside about to change a tire on a vehicle when Hedgepath came out of his residence and began an argument with the two. Grimmett’s brother told Hedgepath, “if you get rid of the weapon, we can fight.”
Grimmett allegedly raised his shirt, revealing a weapon and said, “we have guns, too.” Hedgepath pulled out his weapon and began firing, according to the HPD report. Grimmett fell to the ground, and the weapon in his waistband fell out. Hedgepath then pointed his weapon at Grimmett’s brother and said, “you can be next,” while kicking Grimmett’s gun away, according to the report.
Hedgepath then called 911.
Hedgepath has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery.
