Hinesville City Council voted 4-1 to approve the salary increases for the mayor and city council members Thursday. City Council Member Kenneth Shaw (District 5) was the only member on the council to vote against the proposed wage hike.
Shaw said due to the present state of the economy he felt he could not vote for the salary increases.

The raises go into effect in 2012, when new terms start for the offices. They will increase the mayor's salary from $15,000 to $40,000 and council members from $7,500 to $20,000.
