A man suspected of attempting to rob a Hinesville convenience store was shot and killed by a store clerk Monday night, according to police.

Hinesville Police Department Chief of Detectives Captain Tracey Howard said the man has been identified as Marshall A. Fulwood, 58, of Hinesville.

Howard said around 8:35 p.m. the Fulwood entered the Kwikway Foodmart on the corner of Palm Drive and E.G. Miles Parkway and allegedly tried to rob the store.

He was shot with a handgun by the store clerk, according to Howard, who said it isn't clear if Fulwood fired a shot at the clerk. Police also didn't say whether Fulwood was armed.

Fulwood was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

His name was released after his family was notified.
