One person died, five were injured in an accident Thursday at 5:45 p.m. on I-95 in Richmond Hill.
According to Georgia State Patrol Corporal Shane Copeland of the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, a tractor trailer traveling south bound suddenly came upon slow moving traffic in the right lane of the interstate exiting mile marker 87.
The tractor trailer attempted to avoid colliding with the line of cars and suddenly moved into the center lane striking another tractor trailer causing it to spin out of control.
The tractor trailer which had lost control veered into the right lane where the line of cars was waiting to exit. It struck an SUV dragging it several feet. It was thrown over the side of a concrete barrier onto railroad tracks below. The woman driver exited the vehicle. The first tractor trailer continued to travel, striking another SUV with a woman driver and her male passenger. It was pinned against a concrete barrier and dragged, bursting into flames also causing the tractor trailer to catch on fire.
The woman was unable to get out of the vehicle. Hovever, her male companion made it out and was burned. He was transported to the Joseph M. Stills Burn Center in Augusta.
A Jeep was also rear ended in the accident.
The SCRT team is heading the investigation and according to Copeland. Charges are pending against the driver of the tractor trailer who set off the chain of events.
